The house of your birth chart where your solar return Ascendant lands is the part of life that gets the spotlight for the coming year. Below you get one plain row for each of the twelve houses. Read them as themes to think about, since none of them forecasts an event.
Before you start, have both charts in hand: the solar return and your birth chart. See how to read a solar return chart for the steps.
What does the solar return Ascendant in each house mean?

How should I use this table?
Turn the row for your house into a question. With the Ascendant in the sixth house, for example, ask which daily habits you would like to change this year. The row points at an area. It says nothing about what will happen there.
What else do I check?
The house alone is a small piece. Add these four layers.
- The sign of the Ascendant. It colors how you approach that area.
- The ruling planet. Its house and strength add detail. See chart ruler.
- The Sun and Moon of the return chart. Their houses show where energy and feeling go.
- Planet strength. A Strong planet has support, while a Weak or Afflicted one asks for more effort. Read about levels in the Core Method.
How do I read the table as a pair of questions?
For every house, ask “What do I want here?” and then “What could I stop doing here?” Take the third house. You want clearer conversations, so you stop putting off one text you have dodged for weeks. Or take the eleventh. You join a running club and skip the Friday drinks that never suited you. The table gives the area. The questions turn it into something you can use.
What if my solar return Ascendant is near the edge of a house?
House cusps depend on the house system and an exact birth time. An Ascendant within a degree or two of a cusp could belong to the neighboring house in another system. When that happens, read both rows and note what they share. A close cusp is also a good reason to check your birth time. The page on an unknown birth time lists ways to do that.
Does an angular house matter more?
Some astrologers give extra weight to a solar return Ascendant in the first, fourth, seventh or tenth house, because they are called angular houses. Others weigh all twelve equally. We describe this view as one tradition among several. We do not present any house as lucky or unlucky.
Can I compare my solar return years?
Yes. Keep a short note each year with the Ascendant sign, its house and one sentence about how the year felt. After a few years you can watch the emphasis move around your chart. Use the same method, whether birth place or current location, every year, or the comparison will not be fair.
What should I not conclude?
Do not conclude that a house predicts an event, a relationship, a job change or a health issue. It describes where your attention goes. For decisions about health, money or legal matters, speak with a qualified professional. See the disclaimer.
