The 12 zodiac signs: dates, elements and meaning
Dates, elements, modalities and rulers for all twelve signs, and what each one adds to a chart.
The zodiac signs are twelve 30-degree sections of the sky that the Sun, Moon and planets pass through. When someone asks “what’s your sign?”, they mean your Sun sign, the section the Sun was in on the day you were born.
Each sign is a style, and it works more like an accent than a box. Aries describes how something starts, Taurus how it settles, Gemini how it gets talked about. A planet in a sign borrows that style, so the same few signs keep showing up across one chart.

These dates are averages. The Sun changes sign at a different hour each year. If your birthday falls on the first or last day of a range, your sign could be the neighbor. A chart calculated for your exact birth details settles it.
What the astrology signs mean as a system
The twelve signs are built from two simple parts. Every sign belongs to one of four elements and one of three modalities, and no two signs share the same pair. Four times three gives exactly twelve.
Opposite signs sit six months apart and share a theme from two ends. Aries and Libra both deal with the self and the other person. Taurus and Scorpio both deal with what we own and what we share. Reading a sign next to its opposite often explains it better than reading it alone.
The four elements
Elements describe temperament, the kind of fuel a sign runs on.
- Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) run on enthusiasm and act first.
- Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) run on results you can touch and count.
- Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) run on ideas and conversation.
- Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) run on feeling and closeness.
The three modalities
Modalities describe how a sign handles change. Cardinal signs open each season and like to start things. Fixed signs sit in the middle of a season and like to keep things going. Mutable signs close a season and like to adapt and pass things on.
Put the two together and a sign comes into focus. Capricorn is earth plus cardinal. It is practical and eager to set the plan in motion. Taurus is earth plus fixed, just as practical but far more interested in keeping what already works.
How to find your Sun, Moon and Rising signs
Your Sun sign needs only a birth date. The Moon moves through a sign in about two and a half days, so it needs the date and, near a changeover, the time. The Rising sign, or Ascendant, changes roughly every two hours on average. It needs the exact time and place of birth.
The quickest route is our free birth chart calculator. Enter your details and it shows all three, plus where every planet sits. If you are not sure when you were born, the guide to an unknown birth time explains what you can still read with confidence.
Once you have the three, the big three guide shows how they work together. The Sun is the drive and the Moon is the emotional baseline. The Rising sign is the first impression and the way you approach new situations.
Why one sign is not the whole story
Two people born on the same day share a Sun sign but rarely feel alike. One may have the Moon in a water sign and come across as soft and private. The other may have three planets in fire and seem twice as loud. The Sun sign counts, but it is one layer among many.
A sign starts to make sense next to the rest of the chart. Our reading checks which planets are Strong, Harmonious, Weak or Afflicted and how the four elements balance. It also shows how the chart’s energy is organized into a core type. A Leo whose Sun is weak and hemmed in reads very differently from a Leo whose Sun rules a crowded, confident chart.
If you want to see your own element mix, the element balance calculator counts it for you. For the bigger picture of how a personality is put together, the core types section is the next step.
How to use the sign pages
Each sign page covers dates, traits, love and work. It also shows how the sign behaves as a Moon or Rising placement. Start with your Sun sign, then read your Moon and Rising signs. Most people recognize themselves best in the mix of the three.
If two of your big three share an element, that element is likely loud in your life. If all three fall in different elements, you may switch modes with the setting. You might be practical at work and chatty with friends, then guarded at home. Neither pattern is better, and each one deserves to be read on its own terms.

Questions
What are the 12 zodiac signs in order?
Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. The order follows the Sun's yearly path, starting at the spring equinox around March 21. Each sign covers 30 degrees of the zodiac circle.
What does my zodiac sign actually mean?
The sign most people call theirs is the Sun sign: where the Sun stood on the day you were born. It describes a central drive and a style of self-expression. Your Moon and Rising signs, and the planets in other signs, add layers that can soften, sharpen or redirect it.
Why does my zodiac sign change between websites or years?
The Sun enters each sign at a slightly different time every year, so the boundary dates can shift by a day. If you were born on or near a cusp, check your exact birth date and time in a birth chart calculator to see which sign the Sun was in.
Which zodiac signs are compatible?
A common starting point is element logic: fire and air tend to feed each other, earth and water tend to support each other, and signs of the same element share a natural rhythm. Real compatibility depends on both full charts, especially the Moon, Venus, Mars and Rising signs.
Do I need my birth time to know my sign?
Not for your Sun sign, unless you were born on a cusp day. You do need it for your Rising sign, which changes about every two hours on average, and it helps with the Moon, which changes sign every two to three days.
