Without a birth time you can still read your planets in signs, and usually your Moon sign. You cannot reliably know your Ascendant, houses or chart ruler. This guide shows what still works, where to hunt for the time, and how to read the chart if the time stays lost.

Why does birth time matter?

The Earth turns about 15 degrees an hour. The Ascendant, the sign rising on the horizon, changes about every two hours on average, and the houses are built from it. A few minutes can move the Ascendant a degree or more. Planets move far more slowly, so they stay mostly steady across a day.

What still works without a time?

Part of the chart Without a time
Sun sign Reliable, except on the exact day the Sun changes sign
Moon sign Usually reliable. Uncertain if the Moon changed signs that day
Other planets in signs Reliable for most planets
Aspects between planets Mostly reliable
Ascendant Not available
Houses Not available
Chart ruler Not available

What does not work?

The Ascendant, house placements, the chart ruler and any solar return chart. A solar return Ascendant needs your birth time too, so a year reading without it is limited.

Where can I find my birth time?

  1. Birth certificate. Some countries or regions record the time of birth. Check the long form.
  2. Hospital records. Many hospitals keep them and release them to the patient.
  3. Family. Ask parents or relatives, and check a baby book or early photo albums.
  4. Vital records offices. Some US states and other places record the time and release it on request.

When people remember a time, write down whether it was exact, rounded or approximate.

What is a noon chart?

A noon chart uses 12:00 as a stand-in time. It is a placeholder, not a guess about your real time. It puts the planets close to their true signs. The Ascendant and houses it shows are arbitrary, so skip them.

Can an astrologer work out my birth time?

Some astrologers practice birth time rectification, which works backward from major life events to estimate a time. It is interpretive, takes work, and results depend on the astrologer and the quality of the information. Treat the result as an estimate. We do not currently offer it.

What do we offer without a birth time?

Reports that work without a birth time will be simpler: they leave out the Ascendant and houses. We will describe them in full when ordering opens. Our birth chart calculator can show what is available for your data.

What if I only know the part of the day?

Knowing morning, afternoon or night narrows the Ascendant to a few signs but does not fix it. If you know a window, such as “between 6 and 8 in the morning”, note it and check which Ascendant signs fall inside it. If several signs appear, read your chart without the Ascendant rather than picking one. Do not choose the Ascendant that sounds most like you. That tends to confirm what you already believe.

What about a time that is “about right”?

Hospitals and families often round times to the nearest quarter or half hour. A time written as 3:00 or 3:30 may be rounded. A rounded time is usually fine for the Ascendant sign, but houses and degrees may shift. When the Ascendant is within a few degrees of a sign boundary, mention the uncertainty when you read the chart.

How should I read my chart when the time is unknown?

Focus on what holds steady. That means your Sun and Moon signs, the other planets in signs, the element balance and the aspects. Skip anything that mentions houses or the rising sign. Our guide to reading a birth chart marks which steps need the time.

Is a chart without a time still worth reading?

Yes. Most of what a chart says comes from planets in signs and their aspects, and these stay steady. Plenty of people get a useful reading with no time at all. Just be clear about what it leaves out, and avoid claims that depend on the Ascendant or houses.

What is the next step?

Keep looking for the real time. If you find it, recalculate your chart and read the big three. If you cannot, the planets in signs still give you a meaningful picture. Questions? See the FAQ.

Questions

Is a noon chart accurate?

A noon chart is a placeholder. Planet signs are mostly right, but the Ascendant and houses are not reliable.

Where can I find my birth time?

Look at your birth certificate, hospital records, baby book or ask a parent. Some places keep records that you can request.
