Planet strength in astrology
How well each planet can act in your chart, rated Strong, Harmonious, Weak or Afflicted.
Planet strength in astrology describes how freely each planet can express its nature in your birth chart. Some planets sit in comfortable signs with good support and act with ease. Others work under pressure or with little help, and need more effort to show their best side.
Two people can both have Mars in the same sign and still live it very differently. One Mars might be well supported and direct. The other is boxed in by hard angles and slow to act. Strength is the part of a reading that explains that difference.
What are the four strength levels?
Our method gives every planet one of four levels. They describe tendencies, and none of them marks a flaw.
| Level | What it means | How it often shows up |
|---|---|---|
| Strong | The planet is well placed and well supported | Clear, confident expression that others notice |
| Harmonious | The planet cooperates smoothly with the rest of the chart | Easy, steady expression without much strain |
| Weak | The planet has little support or is hard to reach | Talents that need practice and conscious effort |
| Afflicted | The planet is under pressure from hard conditions | Friction and drive, often a place of growth |
A Strong Mercury shows up as the friend who explains your phone plan better than the salesperson did. A Harmonious Venus makes small kindnesses come easily, like remembering how a coworker takes her coffee. A Weak Mars needs a set gym time on the calendar before it gets moving. An Afflicted Saturn can feel like a boss who is never satisfied, until the pressure turns into discipline.
A planet’s level feeds the wider reading too. It shapes how much weight that planet carries in your core type, so the two results always agree. The full logic is set out on the method page.
What decides a planet’s strength?
No single factor settles the level. We read five groups together, because a planet can be helped in one way and strained in another.
Sign dignity. Each planet has signs where it feels at home and signs where it struggles. Mars is comfortable in Aries and Venus in Taurus, while the Moon has a hard time in Capricorn. The page on essential dignities covers domicile, exaltation, detriment and fall in detail. Mutual reception explains how two planets can lend each other strength.
Aspects. Trines and sextiles tend to support a planet, while squares and oppositions add pressure. A planet caught in a tight T-square reads differently from one resting inside a grand trine.
House position. The angular houses begin at the four angles of the chart, the rising sign, the IC, the Descendant and the Midheaven. Planets there act more visibly. A planet tucked into a less prominent house can still be strong, though its effect is more private.
Retrograde motion. A planet that appears to move backward from Earth tends to turn its energy inward. See retrograde planets for how this changes a reading.
Closeness to the Sun. A planet very near the Sun can be overpowered by it, a condition called combustion. The exception is a planet almost exactly on the Sun, which is called cazimi. The page on combust planets explains these zones.
Which other ideas help read strength?
A few traditional ideas add detail to the picture.
- Critical degrees, especially 0° and the anaretic 29° of a sign, which can make a planet feel urgent or untested.
- Final dispositor, the planet at the end of every chain of sign rulers. It can run the whole chart from the background.
- Essential dignities, the fuller traditional scale that includes triplicity, term and face.
- Mutual reception, where two planets sit in each other’s signs and help each other out.
How do I check my own planets?
Enter your birth details in the planet strength calculator. It lists all ten planets with their levels, so you can see at a glance which ones lead the chart and which ask for more care. The birth chart calculator shows the same ratings next to your signs, houses and aspects.
Then read each planet’s own page in the planets section. A Strong Saturn and an Afflicted Saturn share the same themes of structure and time. They handle those themes in very different ways.
How should I read a Weak or Afflicted planet?
Read it as an area to develop. A Weak planet is still present and still yours. It gets no automatic help from the rest of the chart, so you supply the effort. An Afflicted planet is under pressure, which can bring frustration along with focus and persistence.
Ask what the planet needs to work well. Sometimes that is time, and sometimes it is skill or a better setting. Many people find their hardest-won strengths grow from these placements. Strength ratings describe a chart and never a fate, and they are never a medical or psychological assessment.
- Combust planets, under the beams and cazimiThree zones of closeness to the Sun: cazimi, combust and under the beams.
- Critical degrees and the anaretic degree in astrologyWhy the first and last degrees of a sign, 0° and 29°, get extra attention.
- Mutual reception in astrologyTwo planets in each other's signs, able to help one another.
- Essential dignities in astrology: domicile, exaltation, detriment and fallHow a planet's sign helps or hinders it, from domicile and exaltation to detriment and fall.
- Retrograde planets in the birth chartWhy some natal planets move backward and how that turns their energy inward.
- Final dispositor in astrology: the planet at the end of the chainThe single planet every rulership chain leads back to, and how to trace it.
Questions
What does planet strength mean in astrology?
It describes how freely a planet can express its nature in a birth chart. A strong planet acts clearly and confidently, while a weaker one has less support and may need more conscious effort to work well.
What are the four strength levels in your method?
We rate each planet as Strong, Harmonious, Weak or Afflicted. The level comes from several factors read together, including sign dignity, aspects, house position, retrograde motion and closeness to the Sun.
Is an Afflicted planet bad?
No. It means the planet is under pressure, so its themes may come with friction. That friction often becomes a source of effort and growth, and the level is never a verdict on a person.
Can a planet be strong in one way and weak in another?
Yes. A planet might be in a comfortable sign yet receive several hard aspects, or sit in a quiet house while being well supported by other planets. So we weigh the factors together instead of using a single rule.
Do I need my birth time to see planet strength?
Sign, aspects, retrograde motion and combustion only need the date, though the Moon moves fast enough that time helps. House position depends on an accurate birth time, so some ratings are less precise without it.
