A T-square is an aspect pattern in which two planets oppose each other, about 180 degrees apart, and a third planet squares both of them at about 90 degrees. That third planet is the apex. The pattern brings tension and drive, and the apex is where the action happens.
How do I know if I have a T-square?
Find an opposition in your chart. Then look at the point halfway between the two planets, on either side, and check for a third planet about 90 degrees from both. If it is there, those three planets form a T-square. Most astrologers allow an orb of about 6 to 8 degrees, though exact angles hit harder.
The signs give you a shortcut. All three planets in a T-square share a modality as a rule, so the pattern is cardinal, fixed or mutable. The chart shape calculator shows a T-square next to the overall shape of your chart.
| Part | What it is | Core meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Opposition | Two planets 180 degrees apart | The two poles of the tension |
| Apex | Third planet squaring both | The place where tension is released |
| Empty leg | Point opposite the apex | The missing balance |
| Modality | Cardinal, fixed or mutable | The style of the tension |
What does a T-square mean?
The two opposed planets pull against each other, and the apex planet gets squeezed in the middle. In the classic reading, the person settles the pattern through action at the apex. With Mars at the apex, for instance, the tension comes out through effort and pushing forward, like the person who goes for a hard run after every argument.
Signs and houses supply the details. A T-square also marks an area where skills are learned the hard way, and that area later turns into a source of competence. Read it as a push to act. It carries no sentence of lifelong difficulty.
How does modality change a T-square?
- Cardinal T-square: a drive to start things, tied to action and leadership. Watch for rushing.
- Fixed T-square: persistence with a stubborn edge. Bending a little is the lesson.
- Mutable T-square: adaptable and restless. Staying with one task is the hard part.
What is the empty leg and why does it matter?
The point opposite the apex would complete the cross. No planet sits there, and astrologers read that missing leg as the resource the pattern lacks. When a transiting planet or a progression reaches that point, the pressure eases or shifts. Look at the sign and house of the empty leg to see what kind of balance would help.
How do I work with a T-square?
Treat it as energy to spend. Name the three planets involved, write down what each one wants, and look for ways to meet all three. Put your main effort through the apex. The empty leg tells you what to grow for balance.
Check whether the planets are Strong, Harmonious, Weak or Afflicted with the planet strength calculator. A T-square of strong planets works like a powerful engine. Weaker planets feel more strained.
How does it relate to other patterns?
The T-square is the hard-aspect counterpart of the grand trine, which is built from easy angles. Along with the yod and the stellium, these are the main configurations. See all of them in the patterns section, and learn how your core type fits the picture.
A T-square alone cannot tell you how someone will live. Two people with the same pattern can turn out very differently, depending on the signs, houses and other planets in their charts.
Questions
What is the apex of a T-square?
The apex is the planet that makes a square to both planets in the opposition. It sits at a right angle to the other two and is read as the focus of the pattern.
Is a T-square bad?
It is a pattern of tension, and tension also creates drive. Many people with a T-square describe themselves as motivated and capable of achievement once they learn to work with it.
What orb is used for a T-square?
Most astrologers allow about 6 to 8 degrees for the opposition and the squares, with tighter orbs counted as stronger. Different astrologers use different orbs.
What is the empty leg?
The point opposite the apex, completing the square into a cross, is called the empty leg. A planet transiting it can release the tension.
