Zodiac compatibility describes how two signs tend to get along, based on their element, their modality and how far apart they sit on the zodiac wheel. It gives you a first sketch of a relationship’s rhythm. You see where it feels easy, where it rubs, and what each person brings that the other lacks.

A sketch is all it is. Two people are far more than two Sun signs. Below you will find how sign compatibility works, what it can tell you, and where the fuller answer lives.

The three building blocks

Elements set the temperament

Each sign belongs to one of four elements. Each element is a basic temperament.

Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) acts on enthusiasm and instinct. Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) trusts what is practical and proven. Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) thinks and talks its way to a connection. Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) feels first and reads the mood of a room.

Signs of the same element understand each other quickly. Fire and air also support each other, since air keeps fire burning. Earth and water do the same. Water feeds earth, and earth gives water a shape. Fire with water or earth needs more translation. So does air with earth or water.

Modalities set the pace

Each sign also has a modality. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) start things. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) keep things going and resist change. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) adapt and adjust.

Two signs with the same modality share a pace but often compete. Two cardinal signs both want to lead. Two fixed signs both refuse to budge. Two mutable signs may both drift.

Distance on the wheel shapes the bond

The angle between two signs combines element and modality into seven basic relationships. Here they are in plain terms.

  1. Same sign. A mirror. You understand each other at once and share the same blind spots.
  2. Semi-sextile (neighbors). One sign apart, different elements. Close but unlike, like neighbors who borrow tools and argue about the fence.
  3. Sextile. Two signs apart, compatible elements. Friendly and lively, with chances that grow when both make an effort.
  4. Square. Three signs apart, same modality, clashing elements. Friction that builds, often with strong drive and attraction too.
  5. Trine. Four signs apart, same element. Ease and natural understanding. Couples here can get so comfortable that they stop growing.
  6. Quincunx. Five signs apart, little in common. Constant small adjustments, like two people speaking slightly different dialects.
  7. Opposition. Six signs apart, directly across the wheel. Two halves with a strong pull, and a need for balance.

Natural allies by element

Element Same-element allies Supportive element Signs
Fire Aries, Leo, Sagittarius Air Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Earth Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn Water Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Air Gemini, Libra, Aquarius Fire Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Water Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces Earth Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Read the table as a guide to where things tend to flow. It does not tell you who to date. Some of the most lasting couples are squares or oppositions. Their differences keep them interested and teach them something.

Compatibility guides for every sign

Each guide covers what that sign needs in a partner and its easiest and hardest matches. It also looks at its opposite sign and how it relates to each element.

You can also browse the pairs directly. Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio and Cancer and Capricorn are three of the classic opposite-sign pairings.

Why Sun signs are only the beginning

When people ask about compatibility, they usually mean Sun signs. The Sun shows your main drive and how you like to shine. It matters, but it is one planet out of ten. It says fairly little about how someone loves, argues or unwinds.

Two Aries can make very different partners. One has the Moon in Cancer and Venus in Taurus, so this Aries is tender, homey and slow to fall in love. The other has the Moon in Sagittarius and Venus in Aries and is restless and impulsive.

So when we compare a couple, five factors carry the most weight.

The Moon shows emotional needs and how each person calms down after a hard day. Moon compatibility often decides whether living together feels easy.

Venus shows what feels like love to each person. For one it is gifts and kind words. For another it is time together or help with the chores.

Mars shows desire, anger and conflict style. Two people with clashing Mars placements may fight in different ways, without fighting more.

The Rising sign shows first impressions and daily style. Our guide to the big three explains Sun, Moon and Rising together.

Planet strength rounds out the picture. Our method rates each planet Strong, Harmonious, Weak or Afflicted. A Strong Venus and an Afflicted Venus show love in very different ways, even in the same sign.

Where to start

Begin with the free birth chart calculator for both people. You’ll need each person’s birth date, time and place. Then compare the Moon, Venus, Mars and Rising signs. The sign guides above help you understand each side.

Want to understand your own chart first? The Core Report describes your core type and planet strengths. For any single sign, the zodiac signs section covers dates, traits and meaning.

Sign compatibility is a good way to open a conversation about a relationship. Any pairing can work when both people understand what the other needs.

Questions

How does zodiac compatibility work?

It compares the qualities of two signs: their element, their modality and how far apart they sit on the zodiac wheel. Those three factors describe whether a pairing tends to feel easy, stimulating or demanding. It is a first sketch, not a verdict.

Which zodiac signs are most compatible?

Signs of the same element, such as two fire signs, tend to share a natural rhythm. Fire and air support each other, and so do earth and water. Plenty of happy couples break these patterns, because the rest of each chart matters more.

Are some signs incompatible?

No pairing is ruled out. Squares and quincunxes involve more friction or adjustment, but friction can also mean growth and attraction. What helps most is understanding each other's needs, which a full chart comparison shows much better.

Is Sun sign compatibility accurate?

It captures something real about style and temperament, but it is a small part of the picture. The Moon, Venus, Mars and Rising signs of both people, and the strength of key planets, often matter more in daily life.

How do I check compatibility with a partner?

Start by calculating both birth charts with the date, time and place of birth. Then compare the Moons, Venus and Mars placements and the Rising signs. A free birth chart calculator is the simplest first step.
