The twelve astrology houses are the areas of life in your birth chart, and each planet lands in one of them. The planets show what kind of energy you have. The house shows where in your life that energy gets used, from money and home to career and private life.

If the planets are the actors in your chart, the houses are the stage. The wheel is cut into twelve sections. Each one covers a different part of everyday life. Self and money open the wheel. Partners and shared money sit directly across from them, and career sits at the top.

A planet in a house brings its nature into that area. Venus in the house of work might mean you care a lot about a friendly office. Saturn in the house of home might mean you took on adult chores early. The house answers the question “where does this show up?”

The twelve areas at a glance

The houses run counterclockwise around the wheel, starting from the Ascendant on the left side.

The 1st house is you as others first meet you. The 2nd covers money and self-worth. The 3rd is everyday talk and siblings, plus the learning you pick up along the way. The 4th is home and family roots. The 5th is romance and creative play. The 6th is daily routines and the job itself, including health habits.

The second half of the wheel turns toward other people. The 7th covers committed partnership. The 8th is intimacy and shared money, along with deep change. The 9th is belief and travel, plus higher learning. The 10th is career and public reputation. The 11th is friends and groups, and your hopes for the future. The 12th is rest and solitude, the part of life that happens out of sight.

Angular, succedent and cadent

Houses fall into three groups of four. The group tells you how strongly a planet there tends to act.

Angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th and 10th) sit on the four main angles of the chart. Planets here are easy to spot in your life and in your behavior.

Succedent houses (2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th) follow the angles. They deal with building up and holding on. Think savings in the bank, or a friendship you keep for decades.

Cadent houses (3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th) come last in each quarter. They deal with learning and letting go. Planets here often work in softer, more mental ways.

Why birth time matters

Signs depend on the date, but houses depend on the clock. The whole wheel of houses turns once in about a day, so the sign on each house cusp changes every couple of hours. Even thirty minutes can shift a planet from one house to the next.

So we ask for the most exact birth time you can find. A birth certificate or hospital record is best. Without a known time the houses become unreliable, yet the rest of the chart still has a lot to say. Our guide on reading a chart with an unknown birth time explains what you can and cannot trust.

House systems

There is more than one way to divide the sky into twelve parts. Different house systems draw the lines in slightly different places, especially for people born far from the equator. Most of the time the differences are small. A planet close to a cusp, though, can land in a different house depending on the system.

If you compare your chart with another program and a planet has moved, check the house system first. A calculation error is rarely the cause.

Reading a house in your own chart

Start with any planets inside the house. Then look at the sign on the cusp, which sets the tone. Last, find the planet that rules that sign. It shows where the story continues elsewhere in the chart.

We are adding house pages one at a time. The first is the 8th house, the house of intimacy, trust and shared resources. More will follow in the cards below.

Questions

What are the houses in astrology?

The houses are twelve sections of a birth chart, each tied to an area of life such as home, work, money, love or friendship. Planets show what kind of energy you have, and the house shows where in your life that energy gets used.

Do I need my birth time to know my houses?

Yes. The houses turn with the Earth roughly once a day, so an hour can move a planet into the next house. Without a birth time, the houses are only an estimate, and many astrologers read the chart from signs and planets instead.

What does an empty house mean?

Very little on its own. Ten planets cannot fill twelve houses, so every chart has empty ones. An empty house still has a sign on its cusp and a ruling planet, and those tell you how that area of life works for you.

Why is a planet in a different house in another program?

Usually because the two programs use different house systems, or a slightly different birth time. Each system divides the wheel in its own way, so a planet near a cusp can move across the line. Check both settings before assuming a calculation error.
