The 7th house in astrology describes your committed one-to-one relationships. It covers marriage and long-term partners, business partners, contracts and open rivals. Planets and signs here show what you look for in another person and how you act once two people agree to share something.
The 1st house is you walking into the room. The 7th is the person who sits down across the table. That might be a spouse or a co-founder, the agent who negotiates your salary, or the competitor you face in the open. Anyone who meets you as an equal and a counterpart lives in this house.
Where the 7th house sits
The twelve houses begin at the Ascendant, on the eastern horizon. The 7th house begins at the opposite point, the Descendant, on the western horizon. So the 1st house and the 7th form a natural pair. One is my move, and the other is your answer.
In natural zodiac order, the 7th house matches Libra, the seventh sign, and its ruler is Venus. The house carries a strong note of fairness and balance as a result. Your own 7th house can start in any sign, though, depending on your birth time.
What the 7th house covers
Partnership is the core theme, and it reaches well past romance. The house describes:
- marriage and long-term committed partners
- business partnerships and formal agreements
- contracts, negotiations and mediation
- advisors and professionals who act on your behalf
- open enemies, lawsuits and rivals you face directly
Every item has one thing in common, a relationship with clear terms. Dating and flirting sit more in the 5th house. The 7th begins when two people say, in some form, “we are in this together.”
Why partners mirror you
Astrologers say the 7th house shows qualities you admire in others because you have not yet claimed them yourself. A reserved accountant with a lively sign on the Descendant keeps falling for the person who starts the dancing at weddings.
Partnerships are one of the main ways people grow. The 7th house names the traits you will meet and admire in the people closest to you, and sometimes resent. Over the years, many people grow those traits on their own. Their relationships then become more even.
The sign on the 7th house cusp
The sign on the Descendant colors what you want from a partner and how you handle agreements. It always sits opposite your rising sign, so the two read as a pair.
| Rising sign | Descendant | What you tend to seek in a partner |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Libra | grace, diplomacy, a calm counterweight |
| Taurus | Scorpio | depth, loyalty, emotional intensity |
| Gemini | Sagittarius | wide horizons, honesty, adventure |
| Cancer | Capricorn | reliability, structure, maturity |
| Leo | Aquarius | independence, originality, friendship |
| Virgo | Pisces | compassion, imagination, softness |
| Libra | Aries | directness, courage, initiative |
| Scorpio | Taurus | steadiness, warmth, simple comfort |
| Sagittarius | Gemini | wit, curiosity, conversation |
| Capricorn | Cancer | care, home, emotional safety |
| Aquarius | Leo | warmth, loyalty, open affection |
| Pisces | Virgo | practicality, order, quiet help |

Planets in the 7th house
A planet in the 7th house puts its energy into partnership. The person you attract, or the role you play in a couple, takes on that planet’s character.
The Sun here makes relationships central to how you see yourself. The Moon asks for emotional closeness and a partner who feels like home. Mercury wants a partner you can talk with for hours, and it reads contracts well. Venus, the natural ruler, is comfortable here and brings charm and a wish for harmony. Venus in Libra shows the same theme at sign level.
Mars in the 7th adds heat and competition. You may fall for strong-willed partners and then argue with them. Jupiter brings generous partners, or a habit of expecting a great deal from them. Saturn here makes commitment a serious matter, slow to begin and built to last. The outer planets describe longer patterns. Uranus asks for freedom inside a bond, Neptune for an ideal, and Pluto for depth, with questions about who holds control.
Any planet close to the Descendant also forms an opposition to planets near your Ascendant. That makes the pull between you and the other person very vivid.
If no planet sits in the 7th
Lots of people have an empty 7th house, and they still marry and sign partnership deals. This area simply has no resident planet to speak for it.
To read it, take the sign on the cusp and find its ruler. With Capricorn on the Descendant, look at where Saturn sits and how it is doing. That planet becomes the messenger for your partnerships. Transits through the house, or a ruler that stands out elsewhere, can bring relationship themes forward at certain times.
How strong your 7th house planets are
A planet’s house is only half the story. A planet can sit in the 7th house and work smoothly or with strain, depending on its sign, its aspects and the rest of the chart. Our method reads the whole chart and rates each planet as Strong, Harmonious, Weak or Afflicted.
A Strong planet here helps you pick partners well and keep your word on a deal. A Harmonious one makes give and take feel natural, like splitting chores without a chart on the fridge. A Weak one hands over too much power and agrees to things it later regrets. An Afflicted one points to the same fight with different partners year after year. The planet strength calculator shows how your own planets score.
Finding your 7th house
Enter your date, time and place of birth in the birth chart calculator. In most chart drawings the 7th house starts at the right end of the horizon line, directly across from the Ascendant on the left. Note the sign on the cusp and any planets inside.
If your birth time is uncertain, the 7th house is uncertain too. The guide on an unknown birth time explains what you can still read. To compare two charts, the compatibility section covers how sign pairs get along. The 8th house picks up where the 7th leaves off, with what partners share.
Questions
What does the 7th house mean in astrology?
The 7th house describes committed one-to-one relationships: marriage, long-term partners, business partners, contracts and even open rivals. It shows what you look for in another person and how you behave once you are in a pair.
Is the 7th house only about marriage?
No. Marriage is its best-known theme. The house also covers any formal or serious one-to-one bond, including a business partner, an agent, a therapist-client relationship or a lawyer working on your behalf.
What is the Descendant?
The Descendant is the point exactly opposite your Ascendant, on the western horizon at the moment of birth. In most house systems it marks the start of the 7th house, and its sign describes the qualities you seek or meet in partners.
Does an empty 7th house mean I will not marry?
No. An empty 7th house says nothing about whether you will marry. It means partnership is read through the sign on the cusp and the planet that rules it, rather than through planets sitting in the house.
Can I know my 7th house without a birth time?
Not reliably. The 7th house cusp is tied to the Ascendant, which changes sign roughly every two hours on average. Without a birth time you can still read Venus and the Moon, but not the house itself.
