Free birth chart calculator
Your chart wheel, core type and planet strengths in one view.
The birth chart calculator turns your birth details into a chart wheel. It then adds what most calculators leave out, namely your chart shape, your core type and a strength rating for every planet. This page explains what each result shows and how to read it. The calculator itself is not live yet.
What does the birth chart calculator show?
You enter your birth date and time, plus the city. The calculator then shows five things.
| Result | What it shows | Where to learn more |
|---|---|---|
| Chart wheel | Planets, signs, houses and aspects at your birth | How to read a birth chart |
| Chart shape | How your planets are spread around the wheel | Chart shapes |
| Element balance | How many planets sit in fire, earth, air and water | Element balance calculator |
| Planet strength | Strong, Harmonious, Weak or Afflicted for each planet | Planet strength calculator |
| Core type | One of five ways your personality is organized | Core types |
What information do I need?
You need the date, the time and the place of birth. Place matters because the sky looks different from different spots on Earth. Your birth time sets the rising sign and the houses. Without the time you still get planet signs and aspects, plus the chart shape. You do not get the houses, and the Moon’s exact degree may be off.
A birth certificate or hospital record is the most reliable source for the time. If it was written to the nearest hour, treat the rising sign as approximate.
How do I read my chart wheel?
Start with the big picture, then move to details.
- The overall shape. Look at where planets cluster and where the wheel is empty. The chart shape calculator names it for you.
- The Sun, Moon and rising sign. They show who you are at the core, how you feel and how you come across.
- The houses. Each one is an area of life where a planet acts.
- The aspects. These lines between planets show whether they work together or pull against each other.
For a step-by-step walk-through, see our guide on reading a birth chart.
How is planet strength worked out?
Our method rates each planet as Strong, Harmonious, Weak or Afflicted. The rating weighs several factors at once. They are the planet’s dignity in its sign, the aspects it receives, its house position and the configurations it belongs to. The same calculation feeds your core type, so the two results always agree. Details are on the planet strength calculator page.
What is a core type?
A core type describes how the personality is organized around the planets’ strengths and the links between them. There are five types. Each has its own page with chart signs, strengths and pitfalls. Start with the core types section, or try the core type test.
How should I treat the results?
Use the chart as a tool for reflection. It describes tendencies and does not predict fixed outcomes. It does not replace medical or legal advice, or advice about money. If a result feels wrong, check your birth time first, since it has the largest effect on the houses and the rising sign.
Questions
Do I need my exact birth time?
Birth time changes the rising sign and the houses. Without it we show only what does not depend on time, such as planet signs and most aspects. If you can, check your birth certificate for the time.
Is the birth chart calculator accurate?
Positions are calculated with the Swiss Ephemeris, a widely used astronomical data set. Accuracy depends on the birth data you enter, especially the time and place.
What is the difference between a birth chart and a horoscope?
A birth chart is a map of the sky at your birth. A horoscope usually means a forecast for a period. The chart is the starting point for both.
Is my birth data stored?
Your birth data is never put in the page address or sent to analytics. See our privacy page for what is kept.
