Core architecture types
Five ways a personality is put together.
This section explains the five core architecture types, the ways a personality can be put together in a birth chart. Most astrology starts from the Sun sign, which is a good first step but covers only one planet. The core is larger. It is the structure that holds your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, strong planets and their links together.
We describe five ways this core can be built. The type names are working names and may still change.
What is the core of a birth chart?
The core is an idea, and you will not find it as a single point in the chart. It lets you say, in a sentence or two, what drives a person and how that drive is organized. Astrologers check several things to find it. They start with the Sun, Moon and Ascendant and their rulers. Then they add the balance of elements, the strong planets, and how planets connect through rulership chains and aspects.
A dispositor chain sounds technical, but it is easy to follow. Every planet sits in a sign, and every sign has a ruling planet. Follow the planet to its ruler, then that ruler to its own, and so on. The path shows where a chart passes its energy along, and where it stops.
What are the five core types?
| Type | The short version | Chart signs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Pyramid | Goals are built in stages, base first | Strong Saturn or Jupiter in the 10th, fixed signs on the angles |
| Linear | Goals run in parallel and stay independent | Many mutable signs, air Ascendant or Moon, scattered aspects |
| Circuit | Areas of life depend on each other | Stelliums, Moon on an angle, looping rulers |
| Spiral | Growth comes in cycles, each at a higher level | Retrograde personal planets, outer planets on the 1st and 7th |
| Mosaic | Several strong pillars that do not merge | Many squares and oppositions, broken chains |
How do I find my core type?
Start with your chart. The birth chart calculator shows your placements and configurations. Then compare them with the signs in the table. One or two matches are only a hint. When three or four point to the same type, you have a good candidate.
If the chart itself is new to you, read how to read a birth chart first.
Why do elements matter for the core?
Elements give you a quick reading of a chart’s temperature. A lot of earth, or one element that dominates, leans toward Pyramid or Circuit structures. A strong air emphasis leans toward Linear or Mosaic ones.
The Sun, Moon and Ascendant together also show how stable the core feels. Earth-heavy mixes read as steadier. Air and water mixes read as more fluid.
See Sun, Moon and Rising elements: all 64 combinations for how these three placements combine. Each combination page says what the mix tends to mean for the way you work and relate.
How should I use this information?
Use it as a map of how you are likely to move. Then you can plan with that in mind instead of fighting it. The map does not predict events, and your own judgment about your life still comes first.
Read the five pages in any order. If you want your own chart read this way, our core report walks through it.
What does each core type look like in everyday life?
A Pyramid person asks what comes next, and settles once the current level is done. A Linear person asks what else can run alongside. A Circuit person asks how a change at work will affect home life. A Spiral person asks what this chapter is teaching. A Mosaic person asks which of several strong drives to feed today.
Treat these questions as a quick self-check. Many people hear themselves in two of them. That fits how charts mix types, with one leading and one in support.
Where does this method come from?
It follows a published working method for building the core from the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, elements, strong planets and dispositor chains. You can read how we apply it, and what we do not claim, on our method page.
- The Pyramid coreOne goal at a time, from the foundation up.
- The Linear coreMany goals at once, none waiting for the others.
- The Circuit coreAreas of life lean on each other and work as one system.
- The Spiral coreGrowth in cycles, each loop on a higher level.
- The Mosaic coreSeveral strong pillars that do not merge into one goal.
- Sun, Moon and Rising elements: all 64 combinationsHow your Sun, Moon and Rising elements combine.
Questions
What is a core architecture type?
It is a way of describing how a person's motivations are arranged. One person builds life stage by stage, another runs many goals at once, another sees everything as connected. The type is read from the whole chart, not from the Sun sign.
Can I belong to more than one type?
Yes, and most people do. A chart usually has one leading type and often a second layer, such as a Pyramid with a Spiral second layer. We show the leading type and any strong second one.
What do I need to find my core type?
Your date, place and time of birth. Time matters because the Ascendant and the houses depend on it. Without it we can still read much of the chart, but the architecture is less certain.
Is one core type better than another?
No. Each type has its own strengths and its own typical pitfalls. The aim is to understand how you work, so you can choose settings and habits that fit.
