Planets in astrology stand for your basic drives, and your birth chart shows where each one sat when you were born. Each planet covers one need, such as feeling safe, connecting with people or going after a goal. The sign and house it lands in shape how you express that need.

An easy way to remember it: the planet is what, the sign is how, and the house is where. Mars is the urge to act. Mars in a careful sign acts with patience. Mars in the house of career puts that patience to work on the job.

Personal planets

The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars move quickly through the zodiac, so they change from one birthday to the next. That makes them personal. They describe the parts of you that other people notice first.

The Moon shows what you need to feel at home and how your moods move. Mercury covers how you think and explain yourself. Venus is about attraction and taste, and what you value enough to keep. Mars is drive and anger, the way you go after what you want.

The Sun sits at the center of the set. It shows your main purpose and the way you shine. Read it together with the Moon and your Rising sign, and you have the outline of a personality.

Social planets

Jupiter and Saturn move more slowly and sit between the personal and the generational. They describe how you take part in the wider world.

Jupiter is the planet of growth and meaning. Where it falls, life tends to open up and you are willing to take a chance. Saturn is structure and time. Its placement often marks the area where you start out unsure and, with steady effort, end up the most solid.

The two work as a pair. One says “more,” the other says “build it properly first.” Many charts make sense once you see how these two balance each other.

Outer planets

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto take years or even decades to cross one sign. So everyone born around the same time shares their sign placement. On their own they describe a generation more than a person.

They turn personal through houses and contacts. Say an outer planet sits on an angle of your chart or touches the Sun, Moon or a personal planet. Then it adds a strong current. Uranus brings sudden change, Neptune brings longing and imagination, and Pluto brings deep change that rebuilds from the ground up.

Signs and houses

The sign a planet is in colors its style. Venus in a fire sign loves openly and quickly. Venus in an earth sign shows love through time and practical help, like fixing the leaky tap before you ask. Each planet page in this section walks through all twelve signs.

The house a planet is in shows where that energy gets used most. A planet in the 7th house works through partnership. The same planet in the 10th house works through public life and career. Houses depend on your exact birth time, so two people born on the same day can read very differently.

How strong is each planet?

Placement is only half of the picture. A planet also has a condition, meaning how easily it can do its job in your chart. Our method rates every planet on four levels.

Strong means the planet has plenty of room and expresses itself with little effort. Harmonious means it works smoothly with the planets around it. Weak means it gets less support, so its themes take more conscious attention. Afflicted means it is under pressure from other factors and shows up with some friction.

Each level describes a tendency. A Weak Venus can still love well, and a Strong Mars promises no success on its own. The rating shows where things come easily and where you will grow by working at them. You can see how the rating is put together on the planet strength calculator page.

Where to start

If you are new to this, begin with the Moon, then Venus and Mars. Those three explain a lot about how you feel and what you want, and how you go after it. The cards below link to every planet and placement we have published so far.

Questions

What do the planets mean in astrology?

Each planet stands for one kind of drive or need. The Moon is emotional safety, Mercury is how you think and talk, Venus is what you value and enjoy, Mars is how you go after things. A birth chart shows where each of these drives was placed when you were born.

What is the difference between personal, social and outer planets?

Personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) move fast and describe your day-to-day character. Social planets (Jupiter and Saturn) describe how you grow and where you meet limits. Outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) move slowly and mark whole age groups, so they matter most where they touch a personal planet or an angle.

Which planet is the most important in my chart?

There is no single answer for everyone. The Sun, the Moon and the ruler of your Rising sign usually carry the most weight. After that, the planets rated Strong or sitting close to an angle of the chart tend to stand out.

Can a planet be good or bad?

Not in our method. A planet can have more or less room to work, which we describe as Strong, Harmonious, Weak or Afflicted. A Weak or Afflicted planet asks for more effort, but it is not a flaw or a bad omen.
