What your Moon sign means

If you come home after a hard day and need a hot shower, a friend on the phone or total silence, that need comes from your Moon sign. Your Moon sign describes what you need to feel emotionally safe, and how you react before you have time to think. The Sun shows the person you are becoming. The Moon shows the person who walks in the door, kicks off their shoes and wants something specific from the evening.

Some people need a closed door. Others need a long walk, a plate of something warm or a problem to fix. Those differences are lunar. The Moon also shows how you look after other people. That care is often the same care you secretly want for yourself.

The Moon is one of the three most personal points in a birth chart, alongside the Sun and the Ascendant. The big three guide shows how that trio blends into one personality. This page covers the Moon on its own. You will find what it rules, how it changes by sign and house, and how to judge whether it is working well in your chart.

What the Moon rules in astrology

The Moon is the fastest body astrologers use. It circles the whole zodiac in about 27 days and spends roughly two and a half days in each sign. Two people born a few days apart can share a Sun sign and have completely different emotional styles.

Traditionally the Moon describes your emotional needs, the things that must be in place before you can relax. It describes instinct and habit, the reactions you have before you choose one. It rules home and belonging, the feeling that a room or a town is yours. It shows care given and received, how you nurture others and how you like to be nurtured.

The Moon also carries memory and the past. Early family patterns live here, along with moods that carry over from childhood. It describes daily rhythms such as sleep, appetite and routine. We read these as patterns of comfort, not as health matters.

Keep one question in mind while reading any Moon placement. What does this person need in order to feel okay?

How the Moon works in the signs

The sign colors the need itself. The element of the sign is the quickest way in.

Fire Moons (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) need movement and the feeling that life is happening. They work through feelings by doing something, and they bounce back fast after a bad day.

Earth Moons (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) need stability they can touch. Money in the account and a plan for Saturday calm them down. They show love through practical help.

Air Moons (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) need conversation and room to breathe. Many of them understand a feeling only after they put it into words.

Water Moons (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) need closeness and emotional honesty. They read the mood of a room before anyone speaks. Shallow bonds leave them hungry.

Modality adds a second layer. Cardinal Moons react fast and want to act on a feeling. Fixed Moons hold a mood for a long time, which gives loyalty and slow recovery. Mutable Moons shift with circumstances and adapt to almost anything. Sometimes they lose track of what they wanted in the first place. Read more on elements and modalities in the signs section.

Where the Moon feels at home (dignity)

Classical astrology gives the Moon four special signs. It is at home in Cancer, the sign it rules. It is exalted in Taurus, where its need for comfort meets a sign that knows how to provide it. It is in detriment in Capricorn and in fall in Scorpio.

Those last two words sound harsh, and people misread them. A Moon in detriment or fall describes a person whose needs take a less direct route. Asking openly for care does not come naturally in those signs. A Capricorn Moon earns comfort through work. A Scorpio Moon guards its feelings until trust is proven. Plenty of people with these Moons are warm and caring. Dignity is one factor among many.

The Moon in the houses

If you know your birth time, the Moon also falls in one of twelve houses. The sign tells you what kind of need it is. The house tells you where in life you go looking to meet it.

A 1st-house Moon wears its feelings on its face. In the 2nd, security is tied to money and possessions. In the 4th, home and family matter more than almost anything. In the 7th, emotional balance leans heavily on a partner. In the 10th, mood follows career and public standing. A 12th-house Moon works through feelings in private and needs more time alone than friends expect.

The houses guide covers each house in detail. Without a birth time, read the Moon by sign and skip the house. The note on unknown birth times explains what you can still read.

How Moon strength changes the picture

Two people can both have a Gemini Moon and feel very different. One talks through a problem and feels better within the hour. The other talks in circles at 2 a.m. and cannot settle. They share the sign. The condition of the Moon is what differs.

We describe the condition of every planet on four levels.

Strong. The Moon’s needs are clear and mostly met. Reactions fit the size of the problem, and the person can care for others without running on empty.

Harmonious. The Moon gets along with the rest of the chart. Feelings and goals point roughly the same way, so a Tuesday evening feels like rest instead of a tug of war.

Weak. The needs are there but faint. The person notices they are tired only after they have already crashed, or puts everyone else first by default.

Afflicted. Difficult aspects or an awkward position put the Moon under pressure. Needs come out sideways as mood swings, overreaction or shutting down. This describes strain, and it softens with age and self-knowledge.

Strength depends on sign, house and aspects together, plus how the Moon fits the whole chart. Each Moon sign page describes how that Moon behaves at all four levels. To see your own result, use the planet strength calculator. The reasoning sits on the method page.

Moon and Sun together

Check how your Sun and Moon get along early on. When both sit in the same element, what you want and what you need line up well. A fire Sun with an earth Moon is a different story. One part of you wants to leap, and the other wants a guarantee first. Neither mix is better. A mismatch means both parts need their turn.

The phase you were born under adds texture too, whether new, full or in between. Still, read the sign first.

How to find your Moon sign

The Moon changes signs every couple of days, so you cannot guess it from your birthday. Enter your birth date, place and time in the free birth chart calculator. It will show your Moon sign, its house and its aspects.

Missing a birth time? The Moon sign is still certain on most days. The exception is a birthday when the Moon crossed from one sign into the next. Then the calculator shows both options. Read both pages side by side, and one will sound like you.

Moon in every sign

Pick your Moon sign for the full reading, with emotional needs, love and family, stress patterns and how it works at each strength level.

Once you know your Moon, look at the other personal planets. Venus describes how you love and what you find beautiful. Mars shows how you go after what you want.

Questions

What is a Moon sign?

Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. It describes your emotional needs, your gut reactions and the kind of care that actually reaches you. The Moon moves through a sign in about two and a half days, so it is far more personal than the Sun sign.

How do I find my Moon sign?

You need your birth date, birth place and, ideally, your birth time. Enter them in a birth chart calculator. If the Moon changed signs on your birthday and you do not know the time, the calculator will show both possible signs, and you can read both pages to see which fits.

Is the Moon sign more important than the Sun sign?

Neither outranks the other. The Sun shows what you are building and how you want to shine. The Moon shows what you need to feel safe while you do it. Many people recognize themselves more in the Moon at home and in the Sun at work.

What does the house of my Moon mean?

The house shows the area of life where your emotional needs play out most visibly. A Moon in the 4th house looks for security through home and family. A Moon in the 10th often ties feelings to public role and reputation. House placement needs an accurate birth time.

What is the best Moon sign?

There is no best Moon sign. Cancer and Taurus are classical dignities where the Moon works with less friction, but any Moon can be strong in a whole chart. What matters more is how well it is supported by aspects and the rest of the chart.
