What are essential dignities in astrology? They are the traditional measure of how comfortable a planet is in the sign it occupies. A planet in a sign it rules or is exalted in can act freely and well. A planet in its detriment or fall has to work against the nature of that sign.
“Essential” points to the planet’s inner condition, the quality of its action. How visible or busy the planet is belongs to a second idea, called accidental dignity, which depends on houses, aspects and speed. Both feed into a full reading of planet strength.
The five dignities and two debilities
Traditional astrology gives a planet five possible kinds of dignity, from strongest to weakest, and two kinds of weakness. Many older texts scored them with points. Domicile earned five, exaltation four, triplicity three, term two and face one.
- Domicile (rulership). The planet is in a sign it rules, at home with its own tools.
- Exaltation. The planet is an honored guest, lifted up and given a stage.
- Triplicity. The planet rules the element of the sign, so it has allies nearby.
- Term (bound). The planet rules a small slice of degrees inside the sign.
- Face (decan). The planet rules a 10-degree third of the sign, the faintest dignity.
- Detriment. The planet sits in the sign opposite its home.
- Fall. The planet sits in the sign opposite its exaltation.
A planet with none of the five dignities is called peregrine. It is undamaged and simply lacks a natural base in that sign, like a traveler between hotels.
Table of domicile, exaltation, detriment and fall
These are the classical assignments for the seven visible planets. Traditional sources agree on them.
| Planet | Domicile | Exaltation | Detriment | Fall |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Leo | Aries | Aquarius | Libra |
| Moon | Cancer | Taurus | Capricorn | Scorpio |
| Mercury | Gemini, Virgo | Virgo | Sagittarius, Pisces | Pisces |
| Venus | Taurus, Libra | Pisces | Scorpio, Aries | Virgo |
| Mars | Aries, Scorpio | Capricorn | Libra, Taurus | Cancer |
| Jupiter | Sagittarius, Pisces | Cancer | Gemini, Virgo | Capricorn |
| Saturn | Capricorn, Aquarius | Libra | Cancer, Leo | Aries |
The table is symmetrical. Each detriment is the sign across the wheel from a home sign. Each fall is the sign across from the exaltation. Mercury is unusual. Virgo is both its home and its exaltation, so Pisces is both its detriment and its fall.
Domicile, a planet at home
A planet in domicile works in a sign whose style matches its own. Mars in Aries acts with quick, direct courage because Aries itself is quick and direct. Venus in Libra brings grace and balance because Libra already values both.
The usual image is a host in their own house. They know where the spare towels are and they set the rules. They can be generous, because nothing is borrowed.
Exaltation, the honored guest
Exaltation is a different kind of strength. The planet is away from home, yet the sign admires it and gives it room to shine. The Moon exalted in Taurus finds steady comfort. Saturn exalted in Libra brings fairness and good judgment to its natural seriousness.
Each exaltation also has a traditional exact degree, such as 19° Aries for the Sun and 28° Capricorn for Mars. Some astrologers give extra weight to a planet near that degree. Exaltation carries a hint of display, so astrologers read it as strength that shows well in public.
Triplicity, term and face
The three minor dignities matter most in detailed traditional work.
Triplicity follows the four elements. Each element has rulers for day charts and night charts, plus a participating ruler. In the most common scheme, the Sun rules fire signs by day and Jupiter by night. Venus rules earth signs by day and the Moon by night. Saturn rules air signs by day and Mercury by night. Venus rules water signs by day and Mars by night. A planet in its own triplicity is among friends.
Terms, also called bounds, split each sign into five unequal sections. Each section belongs to one of the five non-luminary planets. Different traditions use slightly different tables.
Faces, or decans, cut each sign into three 10-degree parts. They follow a fixed order of planets that starts with Mars in the first face of Aries. Face is so slight that older writers compared it to a person barely keeping up appearances.
Detriment and fall
A planet in detriment sits opposite its home, using tools that do not suit the room. Venus in Aries wants harmony and lives in a sign that prizes speed and self-assertion. Its affection comes in quick bursts, like a surprise text followed by a week of silence. Saturn in Cancer wants structure and has to build it around feeling and family.
Fall is the sign opposite exaltation. The Sun in Libra, for example, has to share the spotlight and shape identity around other people. People learn the most in these placements, because nothing runs on autopilot.
Both conditions leave the planet working. Its natural style meets resistance and has to adapt, and that effort builds skill and depth.
How dignity shapes a planet’s rating
Dignity is one of several factors our method weighs when it rates each planet as Strong, Harmonious, Weak or Afflicted. A planet in domicile or exaltation gets a boost. Detriment and fall pull it down. Aspects, house position, retrograde motion and closeness to the Sun (combustion) then adjust the picture. A planet in fall with strong, supportive aspects can still rate well. The planet strength calculator shows each planet’s level.
How do dignities connect planets?
Dignity also links planets together. The ruler of a sign is the “dispositor” of any planet sitting there, so dignities join planets into chains. Following those chains can lead to a final dispositor that runs much of the chart from behind the scenes. When two planets each sit in the other’s home sign, they are in mutual reception. They can support each other even if neither is dignified on its own.
To read your own dignities, find each planet’s sign in the birth chart calculator and compare it with the table above. Then read the result with the planet’s aspects and house before you draw any conclusion.
Questions
What are essential dignities in astrology?
They are a traditional scoring of how well a planet fits the sign it occupies. A planet in a sign it rules or is exalted in has dignity and acts with ease, while a planet in its detriment or fall works against the grain of the sign.
What is the difference between detriment and fall?
Detriment is the sign opposite a planet's home sign, so the planet is far from its natural resources. Fall is the sign opposite its exaltation, where it gets little recognition or support. Both are challenges, not verdicts.
What does peregrine mean?
A peregrine planet has none of the five dignities in its position: no domicile, exaltation, triplicity, term or face. Traditionally it is like a traveler without a home, more dependent on aspects and house position for its direction.
Do Uranus, Neptune and Pluto have dignities?
The classical system covers only the seven visible planets. Modern astrologers often give Uranus Aquarius, Neptune Pisces and Pluto Scorpio as home signs, but these are later additions and are usually left out of dignity scoring.
Is a planet in fall a bad placement?
No. It shows an area where the planet's natural style is not rewarded easily, so it often grows through effort. Aspects, house and the rest of the chart can change the picture a great deal.
