Cazimi is the traditional name for a planet sitting almost exactly on the Sun, within about 17 minutes of arc. Astrologers read it as a mark of special strength. It is the inner zone of three. A little farther out, the planet becomes combust and the Sun overpowers it. Farther still, it is under the beams, hidden but less strained.
All three ideas come from one plain fact. The Sun is very bright. A planet close to it in the sky cannot be seen from Earth, and traditional astrologers treated that loss of visibility as a loss of independence. The exact center of the Sun was the exception.
What are the three zones around the Sun?
Astrologers measure the distance between a planet and the Sun along the zodiac. The usual limits are below, though some astrologers adjust them slightly.
| Zone | Distance from the Sun | Traditional reading |
|---|---|---|
| Cazimi | Within about 17′ (0°17′) | Strengthened, empowered by the Sun |
| Combust | About 17′ to 8°30′ | Overpowered, its light absorbed |
| Under the beams | About 8°30′ to 17° | Hidden and muted, yet less strained |
| Free of the beams | More than about 17° | Visible and able to act on its own |
The Sun itself cannot be combust, since the idea describes other bodies in relation to it. The Moon is combust near each New Moon, when it disappears into the Sun’s glare.
What does cazimi mean?
A cazimi planet is said to sit “in the heart of the Sun.” The old image is a guest seated beside a king. They sit close enough to share his authority, and his light does not dazzle them. In a birth chart, astrologers read a cazimi planet as unusually clear and well supported. Its themes tie closely to the person’s core purpose.
The zone is so narrow that cazimi is rare. You need an accurate birth time for the Moon, and an exact position for the other planets, to be sure of it. A planet 1 degree from the Sun is already combust.
What does a combust planet mean?
A combust planet is caught in the Sun’s glare. Traditionally that weakens its ability to act on its own terms. The modern reading is gentler. The planet’s themes merge with the Sun, which stands for identity and will.
A combust Mercury, for example, thinks and speaks mostly through the lens of personal aims. The mind is strong and has trouble stepping outside its own point of view. A combust Venus ties love and taste closely to self-image, so being liked feels very personal. A combust Mars fuses drive with ego. It is powerful, and it takes things to heart fast, like a sharp comment in a team meeting.
Many people with combust planets find those areas hard to see in themselves, though others notice them right away. That fits the old idea of a planet that is present yet out of sight.
What does under the beams mean?
Under the beams is a milder version. The planet is still too close to the Sun to be seen in the sky. The Sun overwhelms it less, so its themes are muted or private. Many astrologers treat it as a minor weakness that other factors outweigh with ease.
Direction adds a fine point. A planet moving away from the Sun, about to become visible, gains strength. One moving toward the Sun fades. This detail helps when two factors pull in opposite ways.
Which planets are affected most?
Mercury and Venus are combust far more than the others, because as seen from Earth they stay close to the Sun. Mercury never strays more than about 28 degrees from it and Venus no more than about 47. Either can fall inside the combust zone.
The Moon is combust for a short time each month, around the New Moon. Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are combust once a year or so, when the Sun passes over them. The outer planets also come close to the Sun each year. Most astrologers give combustion less weight for Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
How combustion changes a planet’s rating
Closeness to the Sun is one of the factors our method weighs when it rates a planet as Strong, Harmonious, Weak or Afflicted. Combustion pulls a planet’s level down, and cazimi lifts it. Under the beams has a smaller effect. Combustion is never read alone. A combust planet in its own sign with good aspects can still rate well. The planet strength calculator shows the result for each of your planets, and the planet strength hub explains the other factors.
How do I check this in my chart?
Find your Sun’s exact degree, then note each planet’s distance from it. Anything within about 17 degrees falls into one of the zones above. The birth chart calculator gives exact degrees for every planet.
Then read the planet alongside its sign and aspects. Combustion is a modifier, much like retrograde motion or a critical degree. It colors a planet and leaves the rest of its story to the chart.
Questions
What does cazimi mean in astrology?
Cazimi describes a planet sitting almost exactly on the Sun, within about 17 minutes of arc. Instead of being weakened by the Sun's light, the planet is traditionally said to be strengthened, as if it were seated next to a king.
What is a combust planet?
A combust planet is within about 8.5 degrees of the Sun. Traditionally its light is overwhelmed by the Sun, so its themes can be hard to see clearly or may be absorbed into the person's sense of identity.
What does under the beams mean?
Under the beams is a milder zone, roughly 8.5 to 17 degrees from the Sun. The planet is hidden from view in the sky but less overpowered than when combust, so its effect is muted rather than blocked.
Which planets are most often combust?
Mercury and Venus, because they never travel far from the Sun as seen from Earth. Mercury is combust in many charts. The Moon is combust around the New Moon, and the outer planets are combust only when the Sun passes them each year.
Does a combust planet stop working?
No. It still describes its themes, but those themes tend to be bound up with the Sun. A combust Mercury, for example, may think very much in terms of personal goals and find it harder to step back and see other views.
