There are five eclipses in 2027: two solar and three lunar. The headline eclipse 2027 event is the total solar eclipse of August 2 at 9 degrees Leo, and all three lunar eclipses are penumbral, the faintest kind.

Eclipses come in clusters called seasons. This year has two of them, one in February and a longer one from mid-July to mid-August. Astrologers read eclipses as stronger versions of the new and full moon, and they look at where each one lands in a person’s chart.

Eclipse dates for 2027

Time zones can move an eclipse date by one day.

Date Type Position Moon phase
Feb 6 Annular solar 17° Aquarius New Moon
Feb 20 Penumbral lunar 1° Virgo Full Moon
Jul 18 Penumbral lunar 25° Capricorn Full Moon
Aug 2 Total solar 9° Leo New Moon
Aug 17 Penumbral lunar 24° Aquarius Full Moon

What you can see depends on where you live. Check a local eclipse calendar for your town. If you plan to watch a solar eclipse, follow the official eye safety guidance for your area.

What each type means

A solar eclipse happens at a new moon, when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth. In a total eclipse the Moon covers the Sun. In an annular one, the Moon looks a bit smaller and leaves a bright ring around it. Astrologers read solar eclipses as beginnings, a bit like a new page that opens before you know what goes on it.

A lunar eclipse happens at a full moon, when Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon. In a penumbral eclipse the Moon only brushes the outer shadow, so the dimming is slight. Lunar eclipses are read as endings and results. Something comes to a head, or you see plainly how a matter has been going.

The February season

The annular solar eclipse of February 6 falls at 17 degrees Aquarius. Aquarius is the sign of friendship, groups and plans for the future, so this new moon suits joining something, leaving a group chat that no longer fits, or sketching a fresh idea for your community.

Two weeks later, on February 20, the Moon reaches 1 degree Virgo, with the Sun across from it in Pisces. Virgo likes routines and useful fixes. This soft eclipse could mark the end of a small habit, such as a morning routine that stopped working.

The first Mercury retrograde of 2027 begins on February 9, so the February 20 eclipse falls inside it. People who follow both may want to wait a few days before making a final call on a new idea. That is only a matter of taste. You can act when you need to.

The July and August season

Three eclipses arrive in about a month. The first, on July 18, puts the Moon at 25 degrees Capricorn and the Sun in Cancer. It brings the balance between work and home into view. Perhaps a long project wraps up, or you decide how many evenings the job can really have.

The total solar eclipse of August 2 follows at 9 degrees Leo. Leo is the sign of self-expression, children and play. This is the strongest new moon of the year in the astrological reading. It suits a creative start, a new way of showing up, or a decision about what you want to be known for.

The season closes on August 17 with the Moon at 24 degrees Aquarius and the Sun in Leo. Here the question is how your personal wishes fit with the people around you. A team project or a friendship might reach a natural finish, or show you what it needs next.

Why Leo and Aquarius come up so often

Eclipses travel through the zodiac in pairs of opposite signs, following the lunar nodes. In 2026 they began working on Leo and Aquarius, and they continue there through 2027 and into 2028. Opposite signs act like a seesaw. Leo says “look at what I made.” Aquarius says “what does the group need?”

The Virgo eclipse of February is one of the last of an older series in Virgo and Pisces. The Capricorn eclipse of July opens a new one in Cancer and Capricorn, which grows in 2028. You can see the shift in the dates ahead.

Date Type Position
Jan 12, 2028 Partial lunar 21° Cancer
Jan 26, 2028 Annular solar 6° Aquarius
Jul 6, 2028 Partial lunar 15° Capricorn
Jul 22, 2028 Total solar 0° Leo
Dec 31, 2028 Total lunar 10° Cancer

Love and friendship under the 2027 eclipses

Leo and Aquarius are a natural pair for love and friendship. Leo asks to be seen and adored, and Aquarius asks for room to be yourself. Across the year, you may notice how much space and attention you want from the people close to you.

If an eclipse falls in your 5th, 7th or 11th house, these topics can feel louder. Couples might plan something new together or settle an old question. Friend groups change shape over time, and an eclipse season is a natural moment to notice that. Nothing here says a relationship will start or end.

Work and money themes

Work themes follow the house in your own chart. With an eclipse in your 10th house, you might think harder about your public role. In your 2nd house, you might review how you earn. Treat these as prompts for planning, and make your decisions on the facts in front of you.

The July Capricorn eclipse suits a look at long projects and goals. The August Leo eclipse suits anything you want to pitch or publish under your own name. Neither one promises an outcome.

How to read an eclipse in your own chart

  1. Open your birth chart and find the house that holds each eclipse sign.
  2. Check for planets within about 3 degrees of an eclipse degree. Those contacts stand out the most.
  3. Give extra attention to your Sun, Moon, rising sign and chart ruler.
  4. Read the house as the area of life and the sign as the style.

Exact houses need an exact birth time. With no eclipse near a key point, the season may pass with little to report, and that is common.

What if an eclipse falls near my birthday?

A solar eclipse close to your birthday puts the eclipse right on your natal Sun. In 2027 that means people born around February 6 or August 2. Astrologers read this as a year with a fresh start in it. At a lunar eclipse the Sun is also near your birthday position, with the Moon across from it. So people born around February 20, July 18 or August 17 get a date for finishing something and clearing space.

How to work with eclipse season

Older books call eclipses omens. Today they sit in calendars years ahead, and you can plan around them like any other date. Use them as markers, and read more in the eclipses section.

Around a solar eclipse, write down one thing you would like to begin, and give it a few weeks before you judge it. Around a lunar eclipse, write down one thing that has run its course. Keep your plans, appointments and trips as they are. If you want a wider view of the year, check where Jupiter and Saturn sit in your chart as well.

Questions

How many eclipses are there in 2027?

Five. There are two solar eclipses, on February 6 and August 2, and three penumbral lunar eclipses, on February 20, July 18 and August 17.

When is the total solar eclipse in 2027?

August 2, 2027, at 9 degrees Leo. To find out what you can see from your town, check a local eclipse calendar.

What is a penumbral lunar eclipse?

It is the faintest kind of lunar eclipse. The Moon passes through the outer part of Earth's shadow and only dims slightly, so many people do not notice it.

Are eclipses bad in astrology?

No. Astrologers read them as stronger new and full moons that mark a turning point in one area of life. They are regular events, and the chart does not predict what will happen.

Which signs do the 2027 eclipses affect most?

Leo and Aquarius get the most attention, with one eclipse each in Virgo and Capricorn. Look at your own chart for planets close to the eclipse degrees.
