You want to save for a house and you also want to quit your job and travel, and both wants show up every single month. A square in astrology is that kind of clash, a 90° angle between two planets that want different things at the same time. The tension pushes you to act, and the effort of solving it turns into a strength over the years.

Squares have a tough reputation, yet most astrologers call them the engine of a chart. They show where you have to try and where nothing comes free. They also show where you will build the most skill.

Angle and orb

The square is exact at 90 degrees, one quarter of the zodiac. Most astrologers use an orb of 6 to 8 degrees, a little wider when the Sun or Moon is involved. A square within a couple of degrees is felt all the time. A wide one may only surface under pressure.

Ninety degrees spans three signs, so squares link signs of the same modality. The cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) square each other. So do the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) and the mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces). The signs share a way of acting but hold different values, which is why they clash. Cardinal squares push to start things. Fixed squares dig in and resist. Mutable squares scatter and change direction.

How a square works

A square brings friction and a call to act. One planet blocks or interrupts the other. In an opposition the two sides can see each other and negotiate. A square is more like a four-way stop where nobody knows who goes first. Something has to give, and you learn by doing.

Early in life, a square feels like the same frustration coming back. One kind of problem shows up again and again until you find a way to handle it. Later, many people find that their squares have become the most capable part of them, because they had to work at it.

A square is also a source of energy. Tension wants release, so squares are linked with ambition and restlessness. People with strong squares find it hard to sit still.

Natal, synastry and transit squares

In a natal chart, a square shows two drives that compete inside you. You may switch between them, feel torn, or overdo one side. The aim is to give both planets a say, so neither one has to win.

In synastry, a square between two people’s planets creates friction, and attraction along with it. You notice each other strongly and may rub each other the wrong way in that area. Many lasting couples have squares between their charts. They learn to work with the difference. See the compatibility section for how relationship links combine.

In transits, a square from a moving planet to your natal planet brings pressure or a decision point. It is a time to act and rebuild. Slow planets, such as Saturn or Pluto, can keep a square active for a long stretch.

Examples by planet pair

These are general patterns. Sign, house and the rest of the chart change how they feel.

Sun and Moon. What you want and what you need are at odds. You feel restless inside, and you also feel a strong drive to bring the two together.

Moon and Mars. Quick emotional reactions and a short fuse. With awareness this becomes courage and a protective streak.

Venus and Saturn. Caution in love and a fear of rejection, as if affection has to be earned. Over time it builds loyal relationships that last.

Mercury and Jupiter. Big ideas outrun the details. Speech gets enthusiastic and can overpromise, and the mind loves to explore.

Sun and Mars. Strong will and competitive energy. It can mean clashes with the boss, or impressive effort when aimed well.

Personal planets and Uranus. A need for freedom that breaks up routine. Expect sudden changes and original thinking, and little patience with limits.

Personal planets and Pluto. Intense feelings around control and power. Deep resilience grows once the person learns when to let go.

How a square affects planet strength

In our method, every planet is rated Strong, Harmonious, Weak or Afflicted. A square counts as a hard aspect and adds pressure. One wide square changes little.

A Strong planet with a square uses the friction as fuel, like an athlete who trains harder after a loss. A planet with a square that also receives a trine or sextile can rate Harmonious, because the soft aspect lets the tension out. A Weak planet under a square keeps losing the argument to its partner and backs down. Several close squares, or a tight square from Saturn, Mars or an outer planet, can push a planet to Afflicted. Afflicted still works, under strain and with friction, and that friction gives it drive. The planet strength calculator shows how these factors add up for you, and the planet strength section explains each level.

Squares inside patterns

Two squares and an opposition make a T-square, one of the most dynamic patterns in astrology. Four squares and two oppositions make a grand cross, with tension pulling in every direction. In both, the squares supply the push.

How to read a square in your chart

Name the two planets and describe what each wants. Then ask where the conflict shows up in your life and what it has taught you. Look at the houses involved to see which areas of life the tension links.

Then check the rest of the aspects. An opposition between other planets adds a different kind of tension. Soft aspects to either end of the square offer support. The birth chart calculator lists your squares with their orbs, so you can start with the tightest.

Questions

What does a square mean in astrology?

A square is a 90 degree angle between two planets. Their needs pull in different directions, which creates internal friction. That friction is uncomfortable, and it also drives effort, decisions and growth.

Is a square a bad aspect?

It is a challenging aspect, not a bad one. Squares describe where you have to work, and the work often becomes a strength. Charts with no squares can feel comfortable but less driven.

What orb is used for a square?

Most astrologers allow 6 to 8 degrees, with a bit more for the Sun and Moon. A square within 2 degrees is usually a defining theme in a person's life.

Which signs square each other?

Signs three apart, such as Aries and Cancer or Taurus and Leo. They share a modality, cardinal, fixed or mutable, but belong to elements with very different priorities.

What does a square mean in synastry?

It shows an area of friction between two people. It can create attraction and energy, and also arguments. Squares between personal planets need patience and good communication to work well.
