A conjunction in astrology is an aspect where two planets sit at the same degree of the zodiac, or close to it, with a 0° angle between them. The two planets merge into one concentrated signal. Their themes show up together, and you rarely get one without the other.

Of all the aspects, the conjunction is the easiest to spot and the strongest in effect. On a chart wheel, it is the pair of planet glyphs sitting side by side. In a reading, it is the first clue to what this person runs on.

Angle and orb

The conjunction is exact at 0 degrees. Most astrologers allow an orb of about 8 degrees, widening to 10 when the Sun or Moon is part of the pair. A conjunction within 2 or 3 degrees feels fused. You cannot switch on one planet without the other joining in. At 7 or 8 degrees the two still lean on each other, but each keeps more of its own voice.

Most conjunctions fall in one sign, which makes them feel more unified. When one crosses a sign boundary, the two planets share a degree range but speak through different signs. The blend then has a slightly split quality.

What a conjunction does

A conjunction fuses and emphasizes. By itself it describes neither harmony nor conflict. It turns up the volume on the planets involved and ties their fates together.

Two singers holding the same note make a fair comparison. If their voices suit each other, the sound is rich and full. If they clash, you still hear one loud note, with a harsh edge. Whether a conjunction feels easy or strained depends on the planets and their sign, plus the other aspects that reach them.

The conjunction also starts a cycle. When the Sun and Moon meet, you get the new moon. Every pair of planets moves through a repeating cycle of conjunction, square, opposition and back again. The conjunction is the seed point where something new begins.

A conjunction also gathers a person’s energy into one area of the chart. Three or more planets in conjunction form a stellium. That makes the sign and house it occupies a central life theme.

Natal, synastry and transit conjunctions

In a natal chart, a conjunction describes two parts of your personality that work as a unit. If Mercury is joined to Mars, your thinking and your drive arrive together. You speak fast and argue with energy, and you treat the combined theme as plain “how I am.”

In synastry, a conjunction between two people’s planets feels familiar right away. One person’s Venus on the other’s Sun feels like warmth and appreciation flowing toward the Sun person. Conjunctions between personal planets are among the first things checked in compatibility work.

In transits, a conjunction marks the moment a moving planet arrives on a sensitive point in your birth chart. These stretches feel like a new chapter around that planet’s theme. A slow planet such as Saturn can stay within orb for months, while the fast Moon passes in a few hours.

Examples by planet pair

These are general sketches of how common pairs work. Your sign, house and other aspects will color them.

Sun and Moon. Will and feelings point the same way, which gives focus and inner consistency. With less inner debate, the outlook can turn narrow.

Sun and Mercury. This pair is very common, because Mercury never strays far from the Sun. It links identity to how you think and speak. A very tight one makes it harder to see your own ideas from the outside.

Venus and Mars. Attraction and desire act together. Expect charm and a strong romantic or creative drive.

Moon and Saturn. Emotions are tied to duty and caution. People with this pair grow up responsible early and show feelings carefully. They are the ones who answer the phone at 2 a.m. when a friend needs help.

Jupiter with a personal planet. Jupiter enlarges whatever it touches. With Venus it brings generosity and enjoyment. With Mercury it gives a big-picture mind, and with Mars bold energy that can overreach.

Mars and Saturn. Drive meets restraint. This feels frustrating early in life, then matures into steady endurance and the ability to work hard over long stretches.

Outer planets together. Conjunctions between Uranus, Neptune and Pluto last for years, and whole generations share them. They matter more personally when they also touch a personal planet or an angle.

How a conjunction affects planet strength

In the Zenar method, each planet receives one of four strength levels: Strong, Harmonious, Weak or Afflicted. A conjunction pushes strength in no fixed direction, because its effect depends on the partner.

A conjunction with a well-placed Jupiter can lift a planet to Strong, adding weight it can use. A conjunction with a supportive Venus moves a planet toward Harmonious, so it works with ease. Weak is the rare result here, because a tight conjunction makes both planets more prominent in the chart. A conjunction with Saturn, Mars or a strained outer planet adds pressure and moves a planet toward Afflicted. The method page explains how aspects combine with sign and house. The planet strength calculator shows the result for each planet in your own chart.

How to read a conjunction in your chart

Start by naming the two planets and asking what each one wants. Then treat them as one character with both of those wants. Add the sign for style and the house for setting. If a third planet aspects the pair, it affects both at once, which is part of why conjunctions sit so close to the center of a reading.

Next, compare it with the other aspects. A conjunction that also receives a trine flows outward easily. One hit by a square carries more pressure. One facing an opposition has to balance against something across the chart.

If you do not know where your conjunctions are, the birth chart calculator lists every aspect with its orb. Start with the tightest one.

Questions

What does a conjunction mean in astrology?

A conjunction means two planets sit at or near the same degree of the zodiac. Their themes fuse, so they act together and are hard to separate. It is the most intense aspect, and its tone depends on which planets are involved.

Is a conjunction good or bad?

Neither by default. A conjunction amplifies whatever planets it joins. Venus with Jupiter feels generous and easy, while Mars with Saturn can feel like driving with the brakes on. Most conjunctions are a mix.

What orb is used for a conjunction?

Most astrologers allow about 8 degrees, and up to 10 when the Sun or Moon is involved. The closer the two planets are, the more completely their energies blend.

Can a conjunction happen across two signs?

Yes. A planet at 28 degrees of one sign and another at 2 degrees of the next are 4 degrees apart, so they form a conjunction. It feels a bit less unified, since each planet speaks through a different sign.

What is a conjunction in synastry?

In synastry, a conjunction means one person's planet sits on the same degree as the other person's planet. It feels like instant recognition, and the pair meets that theme very directly in each other's company.
