Zodiac sign calculator
Your Sun sign and its exact degree from your birth date alone.
Your zodiac sign is the sign the Sun was in on the day you were born. Enter your birth date above to see that sign and the Sun’s exact degree.
The math happens in your browser. Your date is not sent anywhere, and nothing is stored.
What the result tells you
You get one sign and one degree, such as Leo 14°. A sign is 30 degrees wide, and the count runs from 0 to 29. The Sun moves about one degree a day, so the number shows how far through the sign your birthday falls. A low number means the Sun had just arrived. A number near 29 means it was about to leave.
This is your Sun sign, the one people mean when they ask about your sign. You can read about all twelve on the zodiac signs page.
When two signs appear
The Sun changes sign twelve times a year, about once a month. On those days it starts the date in one sign and ends it in the next. A date alone can’t settle which one is yours, so the calculator shows both signs and says your birth time decides.
If you see two signs, look for your time on a birth certificate or hospital record. Place counts too. The change happens at one moment for the whole planet, and clocks read differently in each time zone. The birth chart calculator page explains what time and place add to a chart.
Why sign dates shift by a day
Printed lists give one fixed set of dates, such as Aries from March 21 to April 19. The sky does not keep to those dates. Three things move the change day.
- The length of the year. The Sun needs about 365 and a quarter days to come back to the same point. A calendar year has 365 days, so each change lands about six hours later than the year before.
- Leap years. Every fourth year, February 29 pulls the date back by about a day. Then the slow drift starts over.
- Time zones. A change at 11 at night in Chicago has already reached the next day in London.
As a result, Aries can begin on March 19, 20 or 21. Someone born on March 20 might be Pisces in one year and Aries in another. A list can’t show that, and a calculation for your own year can. The birthday pages go through the calendar date by date.
Signs and constellations
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac. It begins at the March equinox and stays tied to the seasons. The star groups that share the sign names have drifted away from those positions over many centuries. Sky charts and sign dates differ for that reason, and your sign here stays the same.
What your Sun sign leaves out
Your Sun sign is one planet in one sign. The Moon, the rising sign and the other planets each add their own part. Two people with the same Sun sign can come across very differently once those are in view.
Questions
What is my zodiac sign if I was born on a cusp?
You have one Sun sign. On a change day the Sun leaves one sign and enters the next at a set moment, so your birth time places you on one side. The calculator shows both signs on those days.
Do I need my birth time?
Only if the Sun changed sign on your birth date. On every other day of the year, the date alone gives you the sign.
Why do lists disagree about my sign?
Lists print one set of average dates. The true change day moves by about a day from year to year, so two lists can draw the line in different places.
Did my zodiac sign change?
No. Western astrology ties the signs to the seasons, so the sign you were born under stays the same for life.
Is my birth date saved?
No. The calculator works in your browser, and your date is not sent to us or stored.
