How to use your result
You will see one sign, such as Venus in Libra. Follow the link to read what that placement says about love, friendship and taste. The Venus overview covers the planet itself and how astrologers read it in a chart.
Your Sun sign says who you are in broad strokes. Venus is narrower. It speaks to what you value, the way you flirt and what makes a room feel right to you. Two Virgos with different Venus signs can want very different things from a partner.
How long Venus stays in one sign
Venus spends about four weeks in a sign during a normal pass. Every 19 months or so it slows down, stops and appears to move backward for about six weeks. This is called retrograde. If that happens around one sign, Venus can stay there for about four months.
A long stay means many people born in the same season share a Venus sign. A short stay means your classmate born three weeks after you may have a different one.
Why Venus sits close to your Sun
Venus orbits inside the orbit of Earth. From where we stand, it never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. That limit is the reason you see Venus only near sunrise or sunset.
Each sign covers 30 degrees, so 47 degrees reaches at most two signs away. Your Venus sign is your Sun sign or one of the two signs on either side of it. A Leo, for example, can have only these five.
| Sun sign | Possible Venus signs |
|---|---|
| Leo | Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra |
The same pattern works for all twelve Sun signs. If you find a result that puts Venus three signs from your Sun, the date or the calculation is wrong.
If you were born on a change day
Venus moves about one degree a day at normal speed. On the days it crosses into a new sign, the morning and the evening can fall on different sides of the line. A date alone can’t tell you which side you landed on. About a dozen days each year carry this doubt.
If your result reads wrong and you know your birth time, compare it with the sign next door. The birth chart calculator page explains what your time adds to a chart.
Reading Venus with the rest of your chart
Venus is one voice among many. The Moon shows what you need to feel safe, and Mars shows how you go after what you want. Read Venus with those two for a fuller view of how you love. A Venus in Leo with a shy Moon will show it differently from a Venus in Leo with a bold one.
Questions
Do I need my birth time to find my Venus sign?
Usually not. Venus moves about a degree a day, so the date is enough unless Venus changed sign on that day.
Can my Venus sign be different from my Sun sign?
Yes. Venus can sit in your Sun sign or up to two signs on either side of it. It can never be further away than that.
Why do people born weeks apart share a Venus sign?
Venus spends about four weeks in a sign, and months when it turns retrograde. Everyone born in that stretch has the same Venus sign.
Does Venus retrograde at birth change my result?
It does not change the sign. Your result is still the sign Venus was in on your birth date.
Does this page keep my birth date?
No. The date stays in your browser while the calculator works, and we don't receive or save it.
